We are experts in dead animal removal, and take our job seriously. When removing dead animals, we do a COMPLETE job — not only do we remove the dead animal from your home or yard, we also decontaminate the area, deodorize it, and dispose of the animal or cremate it. If you aren't sure whether the stench in your house is due to a rotting carcass or another reason, we can sniff it out with our noses from our years of experience. We remove dead raccoons, dead opossums, dead skunks, dead squirrels, dead birds, even dead dogs and cats. We frequently remove dead rodents from inside walls, because poison kills rats and mice, who die in your house. We completely solve your dead animal problem by taking these steps:

  • Sniff out the dead animal if it is somewhere in your home
  • When necessary, for example if the animal is in a wall or under your house, cut a hole to remove the animal
  • Remove the dead animal, safely and completely (and seal the hole if needed)
  • Finish the job by decontaminating and deodorizing your home
  • Properly dispose of the dead animal through incineration or other means
  • Prevent it from happening again by finding out how they got in your house

Dead animal carcass removal is specialty work. Sometimes the job is simple, such as a dead opossum in the yard, in which case we can simply wear our gloves and respirator mask, bag the carcass, and take it away for incineration. Sometimes this is more complex, such as when the dead animal is under a home crawlspace, under a porch or deck or shed. Or if the animal is larger, such as a dog or a deer. The most complex cases are dead animals inside the house. The animal may have died inside the attic, or down in the walls, or the duct work, or any other part of the architecture. You may have a bad smell in your home, and you're not even sure what's causing it. We've removed not just dead animals, but rotting food, bad mold, etc. We specialize in locating the source of the smell, and we very commonly cut a hole in the ceiling or wall to remove the animal. We remove every bit of the carcass, mop up the juices, vacuum the maggots, spray it and wipe it down with disinfectant, cleaner, and we repair the hole we cut. In some cases we use ozone machines to neutralize odor.

Fresno Dead Animal Tip: How Long Does It Take Different Animals to Decompose?

Maybe you have had a recent animal infestation, and now are faced with a choice: find the animal yourself, hoping that you can get it out; call in professionals to find and get the animal out; or, leave the animal until it decomposes on its own. There are many factors that can go into this decision, but, mostly, the question you might have would be how long it takes for an animal to decompose.

While this answer might seem like a simple one, it can change quickly, depending on what animal you are dealing with, and other factors such as the temperature and the number of animals that there are. Keep in mind, as well, that in the time that it takes for any animal to decompose, their body is going through multiple changes, including breaking down and releasing gases that will lead to a wretched smell during the entire time that it is taking to fully break down.

In terms of decomposition and timing, there are two main things to think of that will help you factor how long it will take: how many of the animals there are, and the temperature both in the home and around it as well. Most of the time, there will not just be one or two animals- such as in the case of rats or mice- but, instead an entire nest to deal with. With multiple animals, when one dies, the others will begin to feed on it, which can make the entire schedule of decomposition much longer than expected. This can be a larger problem, as well, as by the time that all the animals have finally died, you will have an overwhelming smell to deal with, on top of having to wait additional time for all the animals to fully decompose.

Temperature is another important consideration to think of when thinking of animals and how long they will take to decompose. In the winter time, as well as in periods of extremely cold weather, it will generally take the animals longer to fully decompose. This happens because cold weather will act to preserve the body for a longer period than normally would be expected.

In the summertime, though, or if the animal is somewhere that is close to a heat source, or that traps heat easily, it will take less time for it to fully decompose. However, in the case of heat, the smell will become unbearable and permeate the entire house before finally dissipating.

As always, the best recommendation is not to just wait for an animal that has made its way into your home to decompose on its own. If there is a mouse or rat in your attic that has recently died, instead of waiting for it to decompose on its own, you should call in a specialist, making sure that it will be taken care of in a timely manner, without putting your home or family at risk.
